Thomas George Gits, age 80, of Apple Valley, passed away Friday, April 10, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 10, 1934, in Fulda, Minnesota to Victor and Christine (nee Plut) Gits. Thomas is survived by his daughters, Patricia Gits, Julie (Korv) Nizzari, Linda (John) Peterson, and Diane Rubin; grandchildren Michael, Leah, Kelly, Christy, Amara, Luke, Morgan, and Luc; brother, Fr. Doug Gits, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Karen, and sister Marjorie. The son of a blacksmith, Tom served his country as officer in the Army. He graduated from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, in 1956. Tom was a man of strong Catholic faith. He was a founding member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Eagan. He enjoyed singing as a tenor in the choir. He was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus. He was fortunate to work for one company, (ultimately) Lockheed Martin, as a program manager. He enjoyed gardening his plants and beautiful rose beds. In retirement, he enjoyed his gulf coast, Floridian friends, the sunshine and walking the beaches during the winter months. He joyfully hosted his family and friends there many times. He was an avid MN Twins and Vikings fan. He was a kind, generous, charitable, loving, faithful man, with a wonderful sense of humor. His inner virtue shined through his outer charm. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather. He enjoyed his many friends and will be deeply missed, as he was loved by so many. A celebratory wake of his life will be held from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm and Mass to immediately follow on Tuesday, April 14th at 1:00 pm at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 4030 Pilot Knob Road, Eagan. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights. Memorials are preferred.
