Green, Russell Roy, Major, USMCR Ret. 3/15/1922 – 8/24/2010 Age 88. Preceded in death by wife, Caroline M. (Nelson) Green. Survived by sons, Jeff (Pat Evans) and Michael (Kathleen Hartzberg); daughter, Colleen Hampl (Christopher); grandchildren, Russell D., Suzanne M., Sarah C., Alison M.; great- grandchildren, Jaidan P., Danny (Infante); brother, Jack Green (Irene); nieces, nephews and loved ones. WWII Veteran, served in the Pacific, awarded: Bronze Star with Combat V, Purple Heart, 5 combat landings, entered into service as a private, and retired after 26 years of service with the rank of Major. He was a proud member of the 6th Marine division, 22nd Marines. Russell was a proud member of the Mpls. Police Dept. He entered into service in 1947, retiring in 1975 with the rank of Lt. As a police officer, he served in the patrol division, school patrol unit, Homicide/ Robbery Division, and was the Detective Supervisor of the forgery fraud division. His highest rank obtained was Inspector. He also served as V.P. of the Police Officers Fed. of Mpls. In 1971, he was elected to the Mpls. City Council as the 12th Ward Alderman. In 1975, he was appointed by Gov. W. Anderson, as Commissioner of Vet. Affairs for the State of MN. He was then reappointed to that position by Gov. Rudy Perpich. He was a lobbyist for many varied entities, and became a manager of “Transtop” a business dealing with the bus stops throughout the metro area. He was a lifelong Democrat, (although REALLY Independent!). Upon ret., he moved with wife Caroline to beautiful Anna Maria Is. in Florida where he became very active in the Roser Memorial Church. He was proud to be the designated bus driver of the young children. He was an avid golfer, and scored a hole-in-one at the Key Royale Club in 1975. He and Caroline were also associate members of the Norwegian Memorial Lutheran Church (Mindekirken) in Mpls. In 1998 he and Caroline moved back to the Twin Cities to be closer to family, and to once again become involved in civic affairs. Russell was a life member of the VFW, American Legion, Masonic Lodge “Zuhrah” Shrine; Scottish Rite, Mpls. Business Forum, Cooties, and many other civic organizations. He was also former commissioner of the Metropolitan Airports Commission. Visitation Monday, Aug. 30, 5-8 PM, Henry W. Anderson Mortuary, 3640 23rd Ave. So. and one hour prior to service on Tuesday. Memorial Service Tuesday, Aug. 31, 11:00 AM. Interment Ft. Snelling. Memorials preferred to Mpls. Police Honor Guard or the Humane Society. SEMPER FI!
