Shirley F. (Hansen) Sutherland

Born 2/22/1924 to Jon C. and Frances (Hendrix) Hansen in Des Moines, Iowa. Received her degree in Social Work from Drake University. Married Robert (Bob/Bud) G. Sutherland in 1948 and they were happily married until his death in 2004. Shirley was a homemaker and mother to their daughters, Barbara Miles (Apple Valley, MN) and Carol Beavers (San Antonio, TX). The family lived in New Jersey, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, while Bob worked for Northwestern Bell and AT&T. They retired to Sun City West, AZ and loved their slice of paradise! Always active in their church, Shirley served as Deacon and Elder in multiple Presbyterian churches over the years. She particularly enjoyed her work with Stephens Ministries through DPPC. She was an active member of PEO and RV Club. Shirley and Bob loved to travel, whether to Europe or Asia, or taking trips in their RV to Alaska, Nova Scotia or Mexico. Vacations with family or friends were the makings of many happy memories. Shirley was one of those special people we meet too rarely; kind and compassionate, bright and capable, warm and funny. Her friends were many and once you were her friend, she kept you close. She will be greatly missed by her daughters and their husbands, Greg Miles and Lt. Col. Dave Beavers, Retired; grandsons, David (Michelle) Miles, Jonathan (Sarah Schleisman) Miles, Brian (Amanda) Beavers, and Aaron Beavers; granddaughter, Deana (Beavers) Fair; great-grandchildren Emma and Ryan Miles; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Margaret Manthei; and three nephews. Memorial service will be Thurs., Oct. 11, at 2 pm at The Well, a United Methodist Church in Rosemount, MN, with visitation one hour prior. Another service will be held as well at Desert Palms Presbyterian Church in Sun City West, AZ. Shirley wanted to leave the world a better place so donations may be made to the Heifer Project or Habitat for Humanity.
