Robert John Samargia, (72), formerly of Gilbert, died Monday, January 29, 2018, at the Minnesota Veterans Home, Minneapolis, MN.

Robert was born on May 3, 1945 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to George and Olive (Cook) Samargia. At an early age, his parents moved back to the area and he was raised in Gilbert where he attended Gilbert High School graduating in 1963. Afterwards, he attended the Minneapolis Business College where he completed coursework in business administration and was awarded his degree in 1965.

Robert returned to the Iron Range where he worked briefly as an accountant for Parsons Construction Company. During this time the Vietnam War was intensifying so in March 1966, he enlisted and served four years in the United States Navy. He saw tours of duty on the USS Randolph and participated in the commissioning of the USS John F. Kennedy where he served as an aviation storekeeper third class. He was honorably discharged on December 23, 1969. He returned to the Iron Range and was hired at the United States Steel – Minntac Operations, Mt. Iron. He retired as a supervisor of stores & services in 2003 following 31 years of employment.

On September 30, 1972, he married Luzette Ann Vertachnik, a union that lasted 45 years. He resided initially in Virginia but in 1975 moved to Gilbert where he designed and together with Luzette built their home and raised their daughter and son.

Robert was active in the Gilbert St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where he volunteered as an usher for many years. He adored his grandson, Alexander, and enjoyed the outdoor sports of fishing and deer hunting along with watching his favorite pro football teams during the season. He was an accomplished woodworker.

Survivors include his wife, Luzette Samargia; one daughter, Robin (Omer) Jahangir of Mankato, MN; one son, Paul (Abbey) Samargia of Lakeville, MN; grandchild, Alexander Jahangir of Mankato, MN; one sister, Jean (Dan) Malovrh of Minneapolis, MN; two brothers, Joseph (Jane) Samargia of Wilmington, Delaware and Jerry (Susan) Samargia of Gilbert, MN; a nephew and numerous nieces.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents. A private burial with military honors will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Arrangements are being made with the Henry W. Anderson Mortuary, Apple Valley, MN.
