Melvyn Leroy Fisher,
87, was gathered into the loving embrace of our Lord and Savior on the afternoon of June 30, 2024. Born to Alva and Eileen Fisher on August 30, 1937, in Belgrade, Montana. He was a mountain of a man, not just in stature, but in bearing. His presence was as undeniable and all-encompassing as the beautiful Montana mountains in which he was raised.
Melvyn, the baby of his family, was lovingly branded with the nickname of Babe, a name that stuck throughout his school years and well into adulthood. He attended school in Belgrade, where he was raised, graduating from Belgrade High School in 1956. His first foray into higher education at Montana State College ended early providing him the opportunity to pursue vocational school. Melvyn acquired numerous certificates of proficiency in Airplane Mechanics from Holgate Technical, Edison Technical, and Renton Vocational Schools. His certifications led him into his 37-year career as a certified Aircraft Mechanic, which spanned six different states.
Melvyn married Sonya Wegan on September 3, 1961. Together they were blessed with two children, Debra Lynn Lambert (Fisher), and Joseph Leroy Fisher. Sonya tragically passed after a 3-year fight with breast cancer on March 16, 1974. Melvyn placed his faith in God to guide his family through their difficult season of life, his steadfast faith was rewarded when he married Jewell Marie Vermillion on October 10,1975. With the blessing of the new marriage Melvyn’s family grew as they welcomed Jewell and her two children, Michael Dean Vermillion, and Diane Marie Vermillion into the family.
Melvyn’s dedication to his career in aviation carried over into his hobbies, specifically in the form of repairing wrecked aircraft and cars. He built an RV6 from blueprints and kit in his basement and garage. Melvyn, being raised with the mountains in his backyard, was an avid outdoorsman, expert hunter, and fisherman. His love of nature and the mountains was handed down to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The ability to pass his passions down through three generations is a testament to the impact he made on those around him.
Melvyn was preceded in death by his parents Alva and Eileen Fisher, brother Alvin Fisher, first wife Sonya Fisher, and daughter Debra Lambert. His memory and legacy will be celebrated and kept alive by his wife Jewell Fisher, son Joseph Fisher, stepdaughter Diane Sachs, stepson Michael Vermillion, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends and family.
A celebration of Melvyn’s life will be held at 6:30 PM with a visitation one hour before on Friday, July 12, 2024 at Hope Church, 7477 145th Street W., in Apple Valley. Melvyn will be laid to rest at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Vancouver, WA.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Melvyn’s name to Hope Church.
