Marian L. Theilen, Golden Valley, passed away Thursday, November 22 at age 89. Marian was born at Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis on August 7, 1923 and was the eldest child of Harry and Myrtle Larson. She attended Standish Elementary and Folwell Junior High, and graduated from Roosevelt High School in January, 1941 and Minnesota School of Business in March 1942. Following graduation from MSB, she worked for Herman C. J. Peisch, a prominent Minneapolis CPA.
Eventually, she was able to pursue her real dream of a nursing career, graduating from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1954. She spent several years working in the Chicago area before returning to Minneapolis to make home health visits as part of the Minneapolis Visiting Nurse Service.
On July 15, 1961, she married Ed Theilen at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Together, they had one son, Richard, born in 1962. They made their home in Minneapolis and later in Edina. Ed passed away March 13, 2012.
Marian had a life-long interest in travel, theater, and music. Over the years, she was able to visit many parts of the United States and Canada, as well as over a dozen over-seas countries. For many years, she had season tickets to both the Guthrie Theater and the Minnesota Orchestra. She was a member of Scandinavian Friends and the American Swedish Institute. Until declining health began to limit her energy, she was an active member of Diamond Lake Lutheran Church in Minneapolis where she had taught Sunday school and was part of Lutheran Church Women. She was active in the League of Women Voters of Edina, and served as a Den Mother for Cub Scout Pack 75 in Richfield. She and Ed enjoyed many opportunities to visit friends and family in the U.S., Canada, and Sweden.
For the last 7 years, she lived at Colonial Acres Health Care Center in Golden Valley where she passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving Morning. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; parents, Harry & Myrtle Larson; sister, Barbara Anderson; and brother, Roger Larson. She is survived by son, Richard (Cheryl); granddaughter, Kristin; sister-in-law, Alice Larson; brother-in-law, Leonard “Jack” Anderson; nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Thursday, November 29, 4:00-6:30 PM at Henry W. Anderson Mortuary, 3640-23rd Avenue South, Minneapolis. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 AM on Friday, November 30 at Diamond Lake Lutheran Church, 5760 Portland Avenue South, Minneapolis, with visitation one-hour prior. Memorials may be given to Diamond Lake Lutheran Church, The American Swedish Institute, or Colonial Acres Health Care Center.
