Larry Dean Zimmerman,

age 80, in the presence of loving family members passed away peacefully at his home in Apple Valley, MN on the evening of November 10th, 2020.

Larry was born on October 31st, 1940 to Emil and Edna (Steckmann) Zimmermann in Red Wing, MN, and baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bear Valley. Larry graduated from Goodhue High School with the class of 1958 and served in the US Army from 1959-1962, serving two of those years in Chitose, Japan. Larry married Marlys Majerus at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Rochester, MN on October 6th, 1962. Together they moved to Chicago, IL where they started their family and where Larry graduated from DeVry Technical Institute in 1964. In 1965, they settled in Apple Valley, MN into the house they would call home for the next 50 plus years, and in 1966, they became charter members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Burnsville. Larry was a development technician in the computer chip industry. He worked for Control Data Corp for 26 years, and retired in 2007 from FSI Inc.

Larry enjoyed gardening, bluegrass music, singing in the church choir, playing cards and spending time with neighbors, friends and family. He had a winning smile and a wonderfully understated sense of humor. Together, Larry and Marlys enjoyed traveling, taking annual fall trips to hike along the North Shore, and hosting family holidays. Larry loved the role of grandfather to his three grandchildren and took every opportunity to support them and spend time with them.

Larry’s family is especially grateful for the expert care, kindness and compassion provided to Larry by Dr. Susan Cavanaugh , MD, the therapists at Fairview Rehab Cobblestone, teams at Fairview Home Care and Brighton Hospice, Eric Larson of Synergy HomeCare of Burnsville and Guyo Ali of CareBuilders At Home.

Larry was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Marlys; sisters, Lois Zimmermann and Elaine Shelstad and brothers: Wayne, Myron and Earl Zimmermann.

He will be dearly missed by his son, Larry Zimmerman of Minneapolis, MN; daughter, Linda (Harry) Geist of Apple Valley, MN; grandchildren: David Geist, Anna (Scott) Moss, and Greta Geist (Chase Meyer) and great-grandson, Robert Gerald Meyer.

A private funeral will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and Larry will be laid to rest with his wife, Marlys at Lebanon Cemetery in Apple Valley. A public memorial celebration will be held at a later date.

The funeral will be livestreamed at www.goodshep.com/live  Please contact Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for details.
