Pastor John W. Sherman Jr.,

age 86, was promoted to glory on August 8th , 2022.  Surrounded by his loving wife and family, after a long full life lived for Christ. John was born on January 4th , 1936 at home in Courtland, NE to John Walter Sr. & Margaret Sherman. He was saved at the age of twelve on May 8, 1948 and baptized on May 22, that same year. In 1955, he graduated from high school in Wilton Junction IA.
He met Barbara Elaine Frey at Spring Valley Bible Camp, Muscatine, IA, in the summer of 1954.
They then attended Northwestern Bible College, Minneapolis, MN, in the fall of 1955, and
started dating. They were engaged September 14, 1956. They were married on June 29th , 1957 in Estherville, IA, at Calvary Baptist Church.
John graduated from Pillsbury Baptist Bible College with a pastoral degree in 1961, and was
ordained on November 24th of that year. He ministered at Calvary Baptist Church in Mt.
Pleasant, IA, and Storden Baptist Church in Storden, MN. He decided to further his
education at Central Baptist Theological Seminary and earned a Master of Divinity in 1967. Afterwards he ministered at Bethel Baptist Church in Camp Douglas WI, Grace Baptist Church in
Frankfort, IN, Bible Baptist Church in DeKalb, IL, and Grace Baptist Church in Red Oak, IA. He
then was called to Hope Baptist Church in Minneapolis, MN. During this time, he received a
Doctor of Divinity through Baptist Christian University in 1991.
He also served as a teacher and principal in different schools because he felt strongly that his
children should have a Christian education. He started many schools to help others as well as
his own children to achieve this goal.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Sherman; children: Paul Anderson, Tim (Lisa) Sherman, Julie (Frank) McKay and Mark (Karrie) Sherman; nine grandchildren: Josh (Tori) Anderson, Sara (Sam) Utecht, T.J. (Katie) Sherman, Robyn (Josh) Bramer, Erik (Kari) McKay, Jeremy (Bethany) McKay, Emily (Sebastian) Britto, David Sherman and Anna Sherman; eleven great-grandchildren and a large loving family.  He is preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Joy Anderson.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday August 13th , 2022  at Grace (Hope) Baptist Church, 5424 42nd Avenue South, Minneapolis.  Visitation will be 2 hours prior to service starting at 11:00 a.m. There will be a graveside service following at Lebanon Cemetery, 5450 150th St. W., Apple Valley.  Luncheon to follow graveside service at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 14400 Diamond Path West, Rosemount
