Helen Johnson (nee Schmidt)
Born on September 26, 1936 to Alfred and Mathilda (nee Jensen) Schmidt. Her earliest memories were of the family farm in Hugo, Minnesota. When she was eleven she moved to St. Paul and attended Wilson High School where she met her sweetheart, Duane. They were married in 1954. After a few years they moved to Detroit, Michigan for two years then moved back to Minnesota and lived in Roseville for many years where they raised their children. When the kids left home, they moved to Burnsville. During that time, Helen came to a vibrant faith in Jesus. She enjoyed working with kids in Sunday School and made many friends in adult Sunday School classes.
Helen loved to be with people, especially with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends, cooking, shopping, playing cards, camping with the family, and attending the sporting events of her grandchildren. Helen loved holidays because it was a time for family to be together. She invested time in getting to know each of her grandkids. They all loved her very much.
Helen courageously fought blood cancer and rheumatoid arthritis for the last seven years of her life. She finally went home to be with the Lord on April 11, 2023.
She will be missed by Duane, her loving husband of sixty-nine years; sister, Janet; three children: David (Barb), Lisa (Ron) Nyquist, and Kari (Eric) Grittner; eleven grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren; along with many friends.
Memorial service, 11:00 am, Monday, April 17, 2023 with a visitation one hour before at Henry W. Anderson Mortuary, 14850 Garrett Ave., Apple Valley. Helen will be laid to rest with other members of her family at Roselawn Cemetery in Roseville, Minnesota at a later date.
