age 95, died peacefully at home in Minneapolis on November 11, 2009, in the care of her son and daughter and her extended family. Grace was born in Minneapolis on August 15, 1914. She grew up in the care of her mother, Myrtle Gay, and her grandmother, Edith Crosby. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1932, went on to Rogers and Benner’s Beauty School, and was a practicing beautician until she married (Carl) Clifford Johnson in 1936. Grace and Clifford had two children, Douglas (1938) and Linda (1947). She went to work again in 1951 as a piano player at the Adair Dance Studio in Minneapolis, until the mid-1960s. Then, she began a successful Avon career for the next 15 years.
She was a member of Minnehaha Christian Church for most of her life and transferred to First Christian Church when Minnehaha closed. After Clifford died in 1978, she married George Couture in 1980. They lived at Lake Minnetonka, where they gardened, traveled frequently, and enjoyed ice fishing in the winter until George’s death in 1988. She moved back to Minneapolis in 1991 and lived the rest of her life at Nokomis Square Cooperative.
She is survived by children, Douglas Johnson and Linda Smith; daughter-in law, Jamie Johnson; son-in law, Rodger Smith; granddaughters, Alison Merrill (Tim), Angela Neil (Gary), Meredith Johnson (Jade Streit), and Lisa Malec (Patrick); step-grandchildren, Chad Smith (Bon) and Cari Sundeen (Joe); great-grandchildren, Haley, Maisie, Samantha, Shannon, and Wesley; and step-great-grandchildren, Coty, Charlotte, Orion, Cody, Madison, and Jaydn. Interment Crystal Lake Cemetery.
