Embalming may be necessary, however, if you select certain funeral arrangements, such as a funeral with a viewing. If you do not want embalming, you usually have the right to choose an arrangement that does not require you to pay for it. Embalming is required by Minnesota Statute 149A.9l, Subd. 3 in the following circumstances: If the body will be transported by public transportation If final disposition will not be accomplished within 72 hours after death or release of the body by a competent authority; If the body will be publically viewed; or, If so ordered by the commissioner of health for protection of the public health.
